Multimodal Assignment: Acknowledging and Engaging Difference (Revised)

  1. You might give some examples of what you mean by cultural phenomenon (although I'm guessing by the seventh week, they will probably know what the term means). Also, will you be discussing ways of establishing ethos as a researcher?

I like that you clarified that you care more about their reflection than about the specific phenomenon; this should curtail the instinct for students to simply report about a cultural phenomenon, without exploring their analysis of it. I also liked that you directed students to the International Student and Faculty office; I would imagine most students would have some anxiety as to where to find a cultural representative to interview, so that should help a lot.

  2. Really well-designed and theorized. Interview aspect is cool, though scary.

"I will ask a computer expert from OU
to visit the class to introduce us to different processes and applications that can be
    used in your projects." Who?

You might do the teach skills survey and gridding of the class from MC. That way you can use students who know stuff.

I do not think one hour of one class is enough for doing mini-projects to explore the tech. Budget more time. Since you expect them to do separate audio track to edit into the video, this will require more in class work.

What about the equipment? the software? (other than Audacity) formats, files/folders etc. ?

Great, but needs some further detailing.

  3. A very cool project. I wonder if having it at 50% would freak some students out though (I realize that it's broken up between different elements, but still...). You might also consider talking about the interviews a bit in class or writing up your own handout with a few sample questions. While the links for interview info are helpful, I've found that when I've required students to conduct interviews, some of them were really uncomfortable with doing it. So some more direct support might be helpful for shy students.

  4. Wow. You're very detailed. If I were in the class I would be overwhelmed at my first glance at the assignment.

If students chose to video the interview, etc, that would be a lot of raw video, so perhaps you could give them some tips on where to save that video (8GB flash drive?).
