Audio-Visual Analysis

    Cool project! I taught that textbook for a year and I felt it had little potential for visual analysis. Perhaps this was due to the fact that there was little emphasis on the visual during our orientation.

    “Place the images side-by-side, utilize the great effects in fading and zooming iMovie provides. Be creative!”

    I like how you give your students a hint on how to take advantage of the affordances of iMovie! I might steal this from you.:) I would include a point about proper citation under grading, especially that your students are required to collect images from different sources.

  2. This is a good use of the Allyn-Bacon; I also like that you take the time in your assignment sheet to remind students to not try to do everything! I think it is sometimes hard for students to focus on a few specific aspects of a text (or image), which you remind them to do, instead of trying to analyze everything.

    Are you planning to teach them how to use imovie? That might be good to emphasize, so students who don't know the program don't freak out...

    Since you frame this as an argument, you might want to focus a little on reminding students to develop a main point which their analysis of the ads will support. You tell them to pick a few common aspects and talk about those, but, from experience, this will likely lead to disjointed analysis that doesn't work together to make an argument.

    As far as grading, I think your students will want some specifics about what you are looking at to decide if they've successfully done the project. I have certain problems with rubrics, but I do find that they give students a better idea of what you expect as far as minimum qualifications for meeting criteria.

  4. This looks like a fun project. I like the fact that the example you give them is one that you made. Perhaps more examples would help them.

    You say that their 3-page script should be about 2-3 minutes of voice-over on the video. If the script is in paragraph form, I think it will take a lot longer than 2-3 minutes, unless they're reading fast. (I, of course, am often a slow reader).
